So excited to be about to head deep into Virginia's amazing backcountry for 2 days of bicycling the most pristine singletrack the George Washington National Forest has to offer. What a ride! SDS garmin

I'm not too pro at using this thing, but I brought a Garmin 705 along for the ride. The battery far exceeded expectations, and it's pretty cool to see all the numbers. I started it a bit late on day 1, right about when we turned left at the top of the campground, and forgot to hit the stop button till after dinner. Day 2 was good, started right from the lodge and remembered to hit stop within a few minutes of finishing.

Shenandoah Mountain Trail is a bloomin'

Matt Smith, Dan Fudala and I are heading out on our bicycles to clear the middle 3 miles of the Shenandoah Mountain Trail with brushers. The tread is suffering as users are being forced off the downhill side of the trail because the growth pushes one that way. Here is a picture of a dwarf iris from last weekend up there. The Shenandoah Mountain Trail is a great segment of the Great Eastern Trail Bicycle Route. The section known as the "Southern Traverse IMBA Epic" from Rt. 250 to Rt. 627 Scotchtown Draft is officially maintained by Shenandoah Mountain Touring, LLC.

Fore Mountain and Little Mare Mountain Trail Work

Tony and Mike hooked up Fore Mountain Trail as it heads South out of Douthat State Park along Middle Mountain.
Day 2 was a huge job on Warm Springs Mountain. Yes, we had reinforcements join for pizza and beer in Clifton Forge. We stayed at the Trappers Lodge for the night and then we shot North along Little Mare Mountain Trail for a crazy long day clearing the trail. Little Mare is suffering pretty bad from the Gypsy Moth mortality. They killed all the big trees on the ridge for a few miles and all of the saplings have been shooting up and taking over the Trail. Hopefully this clearing job will last more than a few years. Note all of the ATV traffic on the lower slopes of the Trail.

Beards Mountain Roadless Area is amazing. Beards Mountain Trail is a great bicycle ride in either direction.
